Every holiday season I post a video of our Christmas tree growing up out of the floor, and every time the same question lands in my messages: where do you get that. So here it is. This will be our fifth Christmas with it.

Grow and Stow Christmas tree at full height, lit, in a living room
Left, stowed for the season. Right, the same tree about thirty seconds later.

What it actually does

The tree is basically one piece. It collapses down to about waist height, sits on a wheeled base, and you roll it to wherever it is going. Then you press a button and it telescopes up to full height on its own. Press the other one and it comes back down. The only assembly is a small top section that pushes on.

The lights are already on it. You never touch a strand, never test a section, never hunt for the one dead bulb that takes out half the tree.

That sounds like a gimmick right up until you think about the alternative. Three sections to line up. A nine foot box to wrestle through a doorway. Somebody on a chair holding the middle while somebody else tries to seat the top.

Five Christmases in, here is what I think

Setup really is a few minutes

Roll it in, plug it in, press the button, push the top section on. There is a little fluffing to do, but nowhere near what you would expect, because the body of the tree never comes apart. The shape it had last year is the shape it has this year.

It looks real

This is the part I did not believe until it arrived. The tips taper and fork the way real branches do instead of all sticking out at the same angle. People ask.

Up close is usually where fake trees give themselves away. This one holds up.

The lights

Pre-strung, and you can switch between warm white and multicolor whenever you feel like it. My kids pick a different one every year, which is a very small thing that somehow turned into a tradition.

The honest downside: storage

It is big. When you pack it down the top section hangs on the tree, so the whole thing stores as one unit – no box of spare parts, nothing to lose between Decembers. Ours lives in the garage for eleven months of the year and that is completely fine. If you do not have a garage it will roll into a closet, but it needs to be a real closet. Not a coat closet.

This is the thing to think about before you buy. More than the price, honestly.

Eleven months of the year it looks like the photo on the left. Worth knowing before you spend the money.

Is it worth the money?

It is expensive. I am not going to pretend otherwise.

But a real tree is not cheap either, and you buy one every single year – plus the stand, plus the watering, plus vacuuming needles out of the rug until March. Five Christmases in, ours has already cost less per year than the real trees we used to get. And that is before the December evening when everyone is tired and nobody wants to wrestle a tree into a stand.

If you put a tree up for three weeks and you have never once dreaded doing it, this is a lot of money for convenience you do not need. If tree day is the day you quietly resent, it changes that day completely.

Decorated. Nine feet is a lot of tree to fill, which I did not fully think through the first year.

Where to buy the Grow and Stow tree

Ours is a Treetopia, bought five years ago, and Treetopia still sells it – which is the good news, because most people hunting for this tree never find it under the right name. Two places have it, and for most people the answer is Amazon: about $80 cheaper, and no membership in the way. Sam’s is the one to fall back on if Amazon sells out, which it does every year.

On the Sam’s side, non members can check out as guests but pay a 10% surcharge, about $68 on this tree, taking it to roughly $748. A Club membership is $60 a year, so joining costs less than the surcharge. Either way it lands above the $599 Amazon price.

As an Amazon Associate and a Sam’s Club affiliate I earn from qualifying purchases. Prices were right when I wrote this, and this tree does sell out every year, so check before you count on it.

Read this before you order from Amazon

That Amazon listing is six different trees under one title. The size dropdown is not sizes of one tree – it is six separate products, and only one of them is the Grow and Stow. You want the option listed as Multi & Clear Led in the 9ft 6in size.

Option on the listingPriceGrows?
Multi & Clear Led · 9ft 6in$599Yes
Clear Led · 6ft$144No
Multi & Clear Led · 6ft$279No
Clear Led · 9ft$379No
Multi & Clear Led · 9ft$399No
Multi & Clear Led · 10ft$431No

The price spread gives it away. A $144 tree and a $599 tree are not the same tree in two heights.

And “9ft 6in” is not a real measurement. The box says 7 to 9 ft, which is what the Grow and Stow actually does. Amazon needs every option in a listing to have a different size value, and 9ft was already taken by the ordinary tree, so that slot got an invented number. One buyer measured hers, found it under 9 feet and was rightly annoyed. Do not expect nine and a half feet.

The listing shows the grow and stow photos and the grow and stow video no matter which option you pick, so it is very easy to choose a cheaper size and end up with an ordinary tree that arrives in three sections. That is exactly what happened to nearly everyone who left a one star review. The tree is not the problem. The listing is.

So if you go off and search for this tree yourself, you land on that same parent listing with six options and a coin flip. The button below skips all of that and opens the right one.

One more thing worth knowing before you spend this much. A verified reviewer in November 2025 reported large sections of lights failing in the third year. They had one of the non grow and stow versions, so I cannot say it applies to this tree, and ours is still fine heading into its fifth Christmas. At this price I would rather tell you than let you find it on your own.

A quick note on what is actually in the box, because the Amazon listing does not spell it out. One buyer photographed the shipping box, and it lists the lot: 800 LED eight function color changing lights, a metal stand with wheels, a remote, a foot switch and a storage bag. Exactly what ours came with. So the short Amazon description is an incomplete listing, not a different tree.

Who should skip it

  • You have nowhere to put it. No garage, no basement, no deep closet. This is the real dealbreaker and it is not close.
  • You love picking out a real tree. If the lot and the smell are half the point of December for you, no artificial tree is going to fix that.
  • You want a tree under $200. There are genuinely good pre-lit hinged trees at that price. They just take longer to put up, which is the thing you are actually paying for here.

Questions people ask

How tall does it actually get?

It adjusts between 7 and 9 feet, and you can stop it anywhere in between. Useful when it is your ceiling making the decision and not you.

Do the lights come already on it?

Yes. 800 LEDs, pre-strung, and you can switch between warm white and multicolor whenever you want.

Do you need a Sam’s Club membership to buy it?

Not if you buy it on Amazon, which has no membership and is cheaper anyway. For the Sam’s version, non members can check out as guests with a 10% surcharge, roughly $68 on this tree. A Club membership is $60 a year, so joining costs less than the surcharge.

Can you buy the Grow and Stow tree on Amazon?

Yes, and it is the cheaper of the two options at $599 with no membership required. It ships from Treetopia directly. Just make sure you pick the right one: only Multi & Clear Led in the 9ft 6in size is the Grow and Stow. The other sizes on that listing are ordinary hinged trees.

How do you store it?

As one unit. The small top section hangs on the tree when you pack it down, so there is nothing to store separately. It collapses to about waist height and rolls on its own wheels, so ours goes out to the garage. A deep closet works too, but it does need to be a deep one.

Is it worth the money?

Five Christmases in, for us yes. It has already cost less per year than the real trees we used to buy, and setup went from an evening to a few minutes. If you have never minded putting up a tree, you are paying for convenience you do not need.
