Exploring Taste-Safe Play

Taste-safe play activities are not only fun but also provide a safe environment for toddlers to explore and learn through sensory experiences. In general, taste-safe materials like Jello and blended Cheerios allow children to freely engage with textures and colors without concern. Our ocean sensory bin takes this concept further by incorporating these edible elements to mimic the sea and sand, respectively. The only thing not edible are the marine creatures – though you could grab some of those shark gummies instead of the figurines!ย

Materials

Step-by-Step Instructionsย

Prepare the Jello
  • Follow the instructions on the box (e.g., ours required 2 cups of warm water to dissolve the powder, then add 2 cups of cold water).
  • Place marine animal toys or figurines into the Jello. Position them towards the back of the sensory bin where the Jello layer will be deeper to create an underwater effect.
  • Place the prepared Jello mixture in the fridge at an incline to set (this took approximately 4 hours for us).

Prepare the Sand

  • Blend Cheerios until they resemble a fine powder to create the sand texture.
  • Spread the blended Cheerios in the front part of the sensory bin to create the beach area.
  • Provide tools such as a spoon, ladle, tongs, and a bin of water to facilitate exploration and interaction with the sensory bin.ย

Educational Insights: The Impact of an Ocean Sensory Bin on Early Learning

Engaging with an ocean sensory bin offers a host of educational benefits for toddlers. This activity enhances fine motor skills as children use spoons, ladles, and tongs to pick up marine creatures, promoting hand-eye coordination and precision. It also encourages imaginative play, as toddlers create stories and scenarios with the ocean animals, fostering creativity and language development. Additionally, the sensory experience of different textures, such as the smooth Jello and gritty Cheerios, helps with sensory processing and cognitive development.
