Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1

To kick start the blending process, put drops of paint in different shades on a paper to be blended. This is a great intro technique for learning how to blend!

Step 2

For some splatter accents, show the kiddos how you can tap 2 paintbrushes together to get a fun effect! These splatter dots turned into both “bubbles” or “stars,” depending on the stencil used.

Step 3

Use our free printable stencil. We used black paint for a silhouette look!

Step 4

Next, add some texture by gluing sand for the mermaid and dolphin artwork or dirt as we did for the dinosaur artwork. Of course, you can choose whatever texture you like!

Step 5

Finally, add a textured border using shells/branches or another item of your choice!

Beyond Making Stencil Art for Kids!

Painting is a great fine motor activity for kids because it teaches them to see with their eyes while painting with their hands. Holding a paint brush is a great first step for strengthening grip and hand control before using pencils!

Using the stencils also allows them to trace and embrace an artistic tool that can help them create something new and unique.

You can also use the paint colors to talk about paint color combinations and even learn about primary and secondary colors.
