The Science Behind This Fall Leaf Craft: Why Do Leaves Change Color?

This fun Fall leaf craft is the perfect activity to do during the changing seasons to talk about what it means to transition from summer to winter – the weather cools and it’s a time when we may celebrate holidays and special occasions like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah and Kwanzaa. And of course it is the time when the leaves change and fall!

But why do leaves change colors?

Chlorophyll makes leaves a green color. Chlorophyll is located in the cells of leaves and helps to make the nutrients for the tree (process is called photosynthesis). When the sun is strong and the weather is hot, the leaves stay green as they make food for the tree.

However, when the weather gets colder the chlorophyll breaks down and the green color disappears revealing varying shades of colors from yellow to orange to red and purple.
