Materials
- Hole Punch
- 1 piece of cardboard (cut into a circle or any fun shape for the face)
- Black marker (to draw the spider’s smiley face)
- Clear plastic containers (variety of sizes)
- Permanent marker for drawing jack-o-lantern faces
- White rice
- Orange food coloring
- Vinegar (or hand sanitizer for faster drying)
- Scoops, spoons, or small cups
- A Sensory Table, or large bin or tray to contain the sensory play
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1
Dye the rice: Place your rice in a large zip-top bag. Add a few drops of orange food coloring and a teaspoon of vinegar (or hand sanitizer). Seal the bag and shake until all the rice is evenly coated. Spread the rice out on a tray or baking sheet to dry for about 1–2 hours.
Step 2
Prepare the containers: While the rice is drying, use a permanent marker to draw fun jack-o-lantern faces on clear containers of various sizes.
Step 3
Set up the sensory bin: Once the rice is dry, pour it into a large bin or tray. Arrange the containers and provide your child with scoops, spoons, or small cups for scooping and pouring.
Step 4
Play: Encourage your toddler to scoop the orange rice and fill the containers, watching as they “transform” into little pumpkins with each scoop.
