Scissor Cutting Practice – Free The Toys Activity

magnetic slime recipe science project for kids

Task your kiddos to “free the toys” and they will have so much fun! Not only will they get to work on scissor cutting practice independently, but they’re going to be working hard and having a great time trying to free their toys!

The Importance of Scissor Cutting Practice

Scissor skills is such an important skill for them to learn. It’s one of the best ways to strengthen fine motor skills. It can be a bit intimidating at first to learn how to cut with scissors, but this is why it’s important to make the process fun.

Wrapping your kiddo’s toys up with paper to be “freed” is a super simple solution to make cutting skills fun! They’ve asked to do it time and time again. This repetition is great – the more that they can work on their cutting skills, the better! This is a great way for them to build their confidence fast so that they can still work on cutting and having fun at the same time.

Watch This Scissor Cutting Practice in Action!

Creating this activity is easy to do and so much fun for young kids who are just starting to do scissor cutting practice.

You can wrap any type of small toy in paper to be “freed.” I originally wrapped 6 cars in paper for each of my kids, but once they finished freeing all of their cars, they immediately wanted to cut more! So keep in mind that you may want to wrap even more cars in paper than you originally planned to!

Other items you could use instead of toy cars include: mini figurines like animals, dinosaurs, superheroes, wooden dolls, action figures, or toy soldiers.

All activities should be supervised by an adult. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This post may contain affiliate links.

Tips for Helping Your Child Learn to Cut with Scissors

The biggest tip to remember when working on scissor skills is that you need to use scissors that work for your child. Left-handed scissors or right-handed scissors are different, and it’s important to find a pair of scissors that will help your child cut as simple and easy as possible.

Also, encourage them to take their time and have fun in the process. Since this cutting activity is having them work on freeing their car, they’re going to want to be careful and precise to get it free!

Make sure they are holding the scissors in the correct position: thumb pointed up in one hole with middle finger and index finger in the other hole.
