Thumbprint Heart Cookies, Easy Valentine’s Day Treat Kids Can Help Make
If you need a quick, sweet bake that feels extra special without being complicated, these Thumbprint Heart Cookies are it. They’re buttery, soft, and the heart shape makes them instantly Valentine’s Day ready. The best part, kids can actually help with this one, rolling the dough and pressing the little hearts is basically the whole activity. Once they’re cooled, you can add whatever filling your family loves, think a red jam like raspberry for that classic look, or a chocolate spread if your kids aren’t into jam.

How to Make Thumbprint Heart Cookies
1. Heat oven + prep pan. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Cream butter + sugar. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar for about 2 minutes until it looks lighter and fluffy.
3. Add wet ingredients. Mix in the egg and vanilla until smooth and fully blended.
4. Add dry ingredients. Add the flour and salt, 1/4 cup at a time. Mix on low just until a soft dough forms. Don’t overmix.
5. Chill briefly (quick but helpful). Pop the dough in the fridge for 10 minutes so it’s easier to roll and holds the heart shape better.
6. Roll into balls. Scoop and roll into about 1-inch balls. Place them 1 1/2 inches apart on the baking sheet.
7. Make the heart indent. Press your thumb into the center once, then press again right next to it (slightly angled) to create a heart-shaped dip. You can also use the rounded back of a 1/2 teaspoon if you prefer. If needed, take the opportunity to help the heart shape look more formed.
8. Bake. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges look set and just barely golden.
9. Fix the hearts (if needed). Right when they come out, use your thumb or spoon to gently re-press the heart shape if it puffed up.
10. Cool + fill. Let cookies cool completely, then spoon in a small dollop of your desired filling into each heart.
