The Party in Action!

Before I get into all of the details, watch this video for a glimpse of our animal themed party in action!

From creepy crawlers to wild animals, my son loves to explore all kinds of living things! Instead of focusing on a specific type of animal theme party like jungle, safari, woodland, or otherwise, we stayed broad allowing the flexibility to include any and all animal types!

All activities should be supervised by an adult. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This post may contain affiliate links.

Animal Themed Party: Activities!

Whenever I plan my kid’s birthday parties, activities are always one of the most important things to figure out!

We opt for hands on, often sensory-based and arts and crafts experiences over bounce houses and other more costly alternatives. Read on below for the main activities we decided to do for the animal themed party!

Age and interests will also help determine what types of activities you’ll want to set up. For toddlers, and young preschoolers a simple coloring station will provide lots of entertainment! On the other hand, if you have the budget, older kids might enjoy some entertainment like a wildlife show!

Be sure to check out our recent dinosaur themed party too for more activity ideas!

These eggs are filled with building blocks that create wild animals. I set the eggs up on a wood slice cupcake stand where kids had the freedom to select an egg and build what was inside!

What to Eat at an Animal Themed Party!

We went all out when it came to food for this party – from a beautifully crafted buttercream cake with animal figurines and a cascading waterfall, to cake pops, snacks, and a mobile pizza maker.

I always love to give the cake table extra attention because that tends to be where our best photo opportunities take place!

I was also able to find some fun animal-themed snacks for the snack table. Read about them below!

Mobile Pizza Maker

We splurged on our main food option and had a mobile pizza maker come to our house to make kids and parents custom pizzas. It was a big hit – not only delicious, but also a great non-buffet option during these times!

Animal Party Decor

What are we left with once the party is over? The pictures! So setting up a great photo op dessert table is always a priority for us!

I used a leopard print table cloth with a burlap runner that I bought in bulk. I was able to have enough material to make the kids arts & crafts tables in the same style!

I snagged some succulent plants from Trader Joes and a few other leafy plants from Home Depot and dispersed them across the various spaces to integrate living greenery.

Add some green vines, a happy birthday garland, wooden cake pop holder, and balloons (number and cheetah), and everything came together so well!

We’ve used these rustic cake platters in the past for holding cupcakes, but since we didn’t have cupcakes this time, they were great for holding the prize eggs at our building-block station!

Tips for Making a Chocolate Piñata

The Perfect Mold. These molds are made out of plastic and easily snap together. They come in many shapes as well as 2 different sizes – large (like we used) or a smaller version that is great for individual use!

Pinata Prizes. On all the molds, the hole for placing in treats is the same size, so keep in mind that the items are small and should be able to fit into a hole about 2 inches in diameter.

Spread the Chocolate Evenly. The step-by-step instructions are below, but be sure when you add the chocolate you spread it evenly throughout your mold to avoid cracks or holes!

Be patient. Once the mold is filled with chocolate it will need time to set, so be sure to do this in advance!

Materials

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1

If using one of the large molds, melt 12-24 ounces of chocolate according to instructions on the packaging.

Step 2

Pour the liquid chocolate into the mold, plug the hole with the top, and then rotate the mold so the chocolate spreads throughout and as evenly as possible.

Step 3

Place the mold in the refrigerator for 1-2 minutes.

Step 4

Remove the mold from the refrigerator and continue to rotate to make sure the chocolate is continuing to spread evenly.

Step 5

Repeat this step several times before removing the plug to ensure that all the melted chocolate has spread.

Step 6

Place in the refrigerator, without the plug, to set completely for at least 30 minutes.

Step 7

Once completely solid, remove the mold.

Step 8

Add the candy through the hole.

Step 9

When ready to flip, cover the hole up with a piece of thick paper, or cover it back up with the mold and flip instead.

Step 10

Decorate based on your preferences.

Step 11

Keep in the refrigerator until it’s party time, and provide a hammer to do the smashing!

Why Playing With Stickers is Great

I think this rainbow activity really stands out because it’s the perfect combination of fine motor skills and color fun. The kids will use their finger and hand muscles to take the stickers off and then their hand-eye coordination to put the stickers on the cardboard.

This takes patience, skills, and the ability to think ahead so that they can create the rainbow from start to finish.

As they’re creating the rainbow, this is also a great time to talk about the colors and the names to develop vocabulary and language skills.

This is one of those set ups that will have kids engaged for a long time! Keep on reading to find out all the loose parts we included and how to make orange oobleck!

What is Oobleck and How Do You Make It?

Never heard of oobleck (aka goop)? Don’t wait another day! It’s so easy to make! Plain oobleck has a 2 to 1 ratio of corn starch to water! For this set up, I added a pinch of orange food coloring too. The consistency is the coolest — it’s both a liquid and a solid, depending on how you are playing with it. (Rest your hand on top of it: liquid. Squeeze it in your fist: solid.)

    Tips on Embracing the Mess!

Oobleck can definitely make a mess, but heres’ the good news – it’s relatively easy to clean up!

If you can, do it outside, like us. This will allow you to likely be able to spray down the play table with a hose and have everything cleaned up in minutes.

If doing it inside is the only option, lay down some towels to catch anything that falls from the table. Then, make sure you either dispose of the oobleck in the trash can or thoroughly dilute it with water so that it is no longer bound together. I have heard that if you dump it in the sink before diluting oobleck, it can clog pipes!

When oobleck dries, what you are left with is powdery corn starch which can also be easily cleaned up off the floor with a vacuum or broom!

    Materials

    • Pumpkin Seeds
    • Cinnamon
    • Rosemary

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1

To make the oobleck, mix in a bowl 2 cups corn starch with 1 cup water plus food coloring. The consistency should allow one to squeeze the oobleck in the hand to make a solid and when released it turns into a liquid and will fall from the hand.

    Step 2

For the set up, provide Fall-themed objects like pumpkin shells for bowls, a spoonful of pumpkin seeds, sprigs of rosemary, and some cinnamon. Also provide a bin of water nearby so kids can clean the oobleck off their hands throughout the time playing!

    The Benefits of Sensory Play

Sensory play is not only great for having the kids learn about their senses and how important they are, but it’s also great for working on fine motor skills too.

Every time the kids scoop, pinch, pat, or just squeeze anything in this sensory activity, they’re using their hands, eyes, and other senses to learn.

These are skills that they can quickly grow upon as they get older and will use in their everyday lives.

This activity also helps the kids learn about creativity and shows the importance of using their imagination as well. The more they can play and create, the more their love for learning and play will grow.

Food in Play, the Pros and Cons

There are lots of benefits for incorporating food into play – it heightens the sensory experience by including both smell and taste and it helps children with sensory processing disorders get more comfortable with textures and tastes, to name a few.

But including food in play is not for everyone. Whether related to cultural preferences, school rules prohibiting it, allergies, or personal concerns related to food cost and waste, there are lots of reasons grown ups do not set up activities that include foods.

Our personal philosophy is to weigh the cost and benefits of including food in play. I have a son who is very selective with food and textures, so activities like this help him get more comfortable with the goal of expanding his palate. Weighing this benefit with the cost of a packet of pudding (less than $1.50), makes me comfortable to set this activity up for him. So for us, it is worth it! But, of course, we understand this analysis is not a one-size fits all scenario!

How to Create a Messy Play for Toddlers

Don’t forget that creating a sensory bin is all about letting the kids have fun and explore. Whatever pretty scene you have set up will likely get mixed up in minutes! Because of this, don’t make it complicated, and use what you’ve got to save time and resources.

In our bin, we used pumpkin pasta from Trader Joe’s that we tried and didn’t like! (Sorry, TJ, we love you but not your pumpkin pasta!). We also had some wheat cereal that looked exactly like hay bales, so I decided to throw those in as well! Of course, there are toy versions of both pumpkins and hay bales (linked below!).

For the soil, we had a packet of pudding, but you could also make your own DIY mud

6 Reasons Why Messy Play is Important

    1. Language Development. Giving your children rich, textural experiences allows them to better communicate. If they can never touch something that is sticky, how will they know what to call and describe it?!

    2. Physical Development. It takes time for children to develop the practical life skills to NOT be messy, and in order to figure that out they need to have opportunities to explore and strengthen their movements. If you always pour water for your child in a cup with a lid, how will they learn to pour correctly and not spill? To that end, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination are often strengthened through messy play.

    3. Sensory Development. Before a child can talk, they discover the world through their senses, and messy play allows them an incredible opportunity to explore through a sense or combination of senses.

    4. Fosters Independent Play. The goal of messy play should be decided by the child. Messy play is such an immersive experience children often engage in the activity independently.

messy play for toddlers pumpkin patch pudding sensory play

    5. Social Development. In a setting where multiple children are playing, sensory play also fosters social development where sharing and cooperation are often experienced.

    6. Sparks Imaginations. Sensory materials are often open-ended materials allowing a child to use their imagination in the best possible ways. Dirt can become a mud pie, sand a construction site, and a bowl of water the ocean.

Tips for Making Pumpkin This Shape Sorter

This DIY toy is super adaptable! Since we had such an odd sized box, I decided to use it and have the kiddos make a bunch of pumpkins stacked vertically on top of each other, but feel free to adjust based on the kind of box you have! If it is a small one, then just make 1 pumpkin, if it is a big one, make a bunch. It is up to you!

Make sure that you have an opening for the blocks to fall out (my kids love hearing them fall on a metal pan!), or if you prefer they don’t fall out, just make sure you leave an opening in the box so you can retrieve the blocks so the kids can play over and over again!

    The Benefits of Pretend Play

This DIY artist costume is a fun way to create a lasting outfit that can be used for pretend play, aka imaginative play, aka dramatic play!

Imaginative play has so many benefits. It allows kiddos an opportunity to strengthen so many skills through play. Think: language development, social, fine motor, gross motor, problem solving, and self-regulation skills, to name a few. It really spans the spectrum!

The amazing thing about pretend play is how children often act out real-life scenarios allowing them an incredible opportunity to encounter social and emotional situations and roles.

Decor and Other Details for a Kids Halloween Party

Here are some simple ways to give off some major Halloween vibes! Obviously Halloween decor is so adaptable and so dependent on the kind of items you’ve been collecting over the years.

As you can see with this party, the decor is super young kid friendly – meaning no scary or bloody decor. But if your kiddos are ready for that, then go for it!

Also worth noting, I wanted our party favor to be both practical and non-candy related, more on that below! And while we didn’t have candy inside our party favor, we did make sure to have a yummy treat for them to eat while they were at this kids Halloween party.

Why We Love Magnetic Tile Toys

When it comes to creative play, it’s important that you have some open-ended play toys for them to explore! Magnetic tiles allow kiddos to build imaginatively and confidently with the aid of a magnetic force!

Not all magnetic tiles are alike though, which is why we love Connetix Magnetic Tiles. They are super strong, durable, vibrant, and have a fun beveled design. They have lots of sets to choose from including a ball run and car sets

Tips for Making This Magnetic Tile Robot

Choose Strong Magnetic Tiles. I’ve found that the stronger the magnetic tile toys, the longer lasting the play! No kiddo likes spending a bunch of time building something only to have it topple down because of weak magnets! That’s why we love Connetix Tiles. They are super strong!

Raid the Tool Box! After building a strong magnetic robot that won’t fall, the next best thing is finding lots of loose metal parts to stick to it. It’s amazing how quickly random metal parts can form to make fun facial features!

The Educational Benefits of Magnetic Tile Toys

There are a ton of great benefits of playing with magnetic tiles. Not only does this work the brain in creative ways but it pushes the kids to create and make something that they maybe wouldn’t have before.

They will also be strengthening their hand muscles while working on their fine motor skills. Using their fingers to pick up all those tiles and small parts and place them together is the perfect practice! This will also work on their hand-eye coordination each time that they’re doing this.

An Adaptable Fall Activity for Toddlers

The great thing about sensory bins is that there really isn’t any set “rules” on how to make one. Since this is a fall theme, you can plan on everything being all about fall!

Do you have fallen leaves, pine cones, or acorns?! Use them! Yup, it’s that simple! Throw in some fake apples and pumpkins too to talk about some typical produce of the season. We included corn kernels as well, but be sure to omit this if your kiddo is too young and likely to try to eat these.

Tips for Setting Up This Fall Activity for Toddlers

Use What You’ve Got! As I mentioned earlier, don’t underestimate the magic of natural objects that may have fallen right near your feet! Think: acorns, vibrantly colored Autumn leaves, and pine cones!

Dealing with the Mess. When toddlers first use sensory bins it may be difficult for them to keep the items from falling all over the floor. After all, they are likely working on a very important skill of scooping and pouring. And you don’t learn how not to spill unless you make that mistake a few times! Place some towels on the ground or set this up outside to help with the clean up!

Provide Bowls and Tools. Bowls and tools will not only help your kiddo develop fine motor skills, but they will spark their imaginations by finding new ways to use the loose parts in front of them!

    Materials

Sensory Play. Have you heard that sensory play helps to build nerve connections in the brain? Yes, that’s right! Including different textures and sights in this bin will allow kiddos to think and explore using their hands in new ways.

You could even add some scents, like cinnamon for your kiddo to smell and explore!

Fine Motor Skills. And if you throw in some fine motor tools like tongs along with bowls and spoons they will have the opportunity to strengthen their fine motor skills.

Pouring sensory bases from one bowl to the other, or scooping up the materials with a spoon are also all wonderful practical life skills they will use for the rest of their life.

My son has been a big fan of dinosaurs and he was so excited to celebrate his birthday dinosaur-style. This is our 3rd themed party for him. When he turned 3 he had a construction party, and when he turned 4 he had a garbage man party! During his 5th birthday, it was the beginning of co-vid and we kept things simple and theme-less!

    Dinosaur Party: Activities!

Whenever I plan my kid’s birthday parties, activities are always one of the most important things to figure out!

We opt for hands on, often sensory-based and arts and crafts experiences over bounce houses and other more costly alternatives. Read on below for the main activities we decided to do for the dinosaur party!

In addition to the pool, there are 3 places I like to set up activities – on our kid-sized folding tables, inside our sensory table, and sandbox!

We have a free printable dinosaur-themed activity you could include as well!

All activities should be supervised by an adult. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This post may contain affiliate links.

    Clay Dinosaur Eggs

In our sensory bin, I filled up one tub with leaves, mulch, and clay dinosaur eggs each filled with a dinosaur inside! The other bin was filled with water, and I had two bowls filled with excavating tools!

dinosaur party theme for kids ideas and inspiration

    Dinosaur Paint Kit

On our kid-sized folding tables, I set up an arts and crafts activity! These dinosaurs, paints, and brushes were all part of a kit. So much fun transforming the white dinosaurs into colorful ones!

dinosaur party theme for kids ideas and inspiration

    Fossil Sand Dig

Inside our sand box, kids tapped into their inner paleontologist using sifting tools to find fossils underneath the sand. Other kids enjoyed hiding them right back under the sand for a friend to find!

dinosaur party theme for kids ideas and inspiration

    Pool Time!

With warm weather, we kept the pool open and added several dinosaur themed inflatables. We also splurged and got a life guard to keep the pool activity extra safe and allow parents to chat!

What to Eat at a Dinosaur Party!

The star of this section is the cake! We added figurines and a volcano to decorate an 8 inch cake. To keep the look earthy, sprinkle graham crackers on the cake platter!

Since we are extra conscious of germs and keeping our guests healthy, we opted for a number sparkler instead of candles that are blown out.

Dinosaur caddies filled with succulent plants with larger succulents in planters make for a fun decor around the cake too!

    Dinosaur Cupcakes!

I originally planned to have cake pops, but I couldn’t find a baker on such short notice. Instead, I called Whole Foods and they were able to make these fun dinosaur-themed cupcakes after I showed them a few inspirational photos!

dinosaur party theme for kids ideas and inspiration

    Disposable Plates and Napkins

There are a lot of dinosaur plates and napkin options out there, but I narrowed it down to these! I love that the design is the perfect balance between fun and realistic. Not cartoony and not scary!

dinosaur party theme for kids ideas and inspiration

    Snack Center

Our only snack that was dinosaur-themed were our apple sauce pouches! Everything else was just easy, single-use options that kids would like. With the virus, we wanted to keep snacks individual to prevent the spread of germs!

dinosaur party theme for kids ideas and inspiration

    Mobile Pizza Maker

We splurged on our main food option and had a mobile pizza maker come to our house to make kids and parents custom pizzas. It was a big hit – not only delicious, but also a great non-buffet option during these times!

    Dinosaur Party Decor

What are we left with once the party is over? The pictures! So setting up a great photo op dessert table is always a priority for us!

I used a leaf-themed table cloth with a burlap runner that I bought in bulk. I was able to have enough material to make the kids arts & crafts tables in the same style!

I snagged some succulent plants from Trader Joes and a few other leafy plants from Home Depot and dispersed them across the various spaces to integrate living greenery.

Add a cute garland, adorable wood-slice cake platter and cupcake platters, and balloons (number, dinosaur, and rawr!), and everything came together so earthy and fun!

    Wood Slice Cake Platters

One of my favorite items from this party is the 2-tiered cupcake platter. The wood grain is so natural and added so much texture to the decor.

    Dinosaur Planter

We transformed dinosaur pencil caddies into planters by filling them up with soil and succulents! But you can also get these cute ones too that are designed to be planters!

    Burlap Runner

I love that this high quality burlap runner comes in a bulk roll! I was able to use it on 3 different tables and I have more to spare for our next party! It gave the tables such a great texture!

    Leaf Print Table Cloth

This palm leaf print table cloth is perfect for a dinosaur party (or a Hawaiian one too!). Each pack comes with 2 table clothes that are water proof!

    Party Favors

We always opt to spend a little extra budget on a high quality party favor that kids will actually use more than once! Kid’s got to take home a book for emerging readers and a ceramic dinosaur paint kit!

    Dinosaur-Themed Outfit

Since we had a pool party, we went with dinosaur themed bathing suits, including dinosaur swim trunks and an adorable pink dinosaur onesie swimsuit!

    Dinosaur Costume

Instead of hiring someone to come dressed up as a mascot, have a family member do it instead! Uncle to the rescue with this fun dinosaur costume. Also great to hold on for Halloween!

dinosaur party theme for kids ideas and inspiration

    Dinosaur Piñata

Piñatas are such a fun way to add entertainment to a birthday party. This dinosaur shaped piñata comes with a stick and a blindfold. Fill it up with candy or small toys of your choice!

dinosaur party theme for kids ideas and inspiration

    Number Balloons

Number balloons are a fun way to shine a light on your little one’s new age! Make sure to use a very strong double sided tape to make sure it stays up on the wall throughout the party!

dinosaur party theme for kids ideas and inspiration

    Rawr Balloon

Add a little fun with this-dinosaur themed Rawr balloon! And add some dinosaurs balloons to the mix as well if you have the wall space! This double sided tape is the best.

dinosaur party theme for kids ideas and inspiration

    Garland

This tassel garland is the perfect color scheme for a dinosaur-themed party! The tassels have wooden beads in between adding for a natural jungle and woodland look!

Beyond a Birthday Play Dough Kit – The Benefits of Playing with Dough!

Play dough offers so many great learning benefits. The kids will be able to use their fine motor skills to create while also using their sensory skills. I also love that play dough has the kids creating and thinking outside the box on fun things to create.

The more that they can create using play dough, the more that they’re going to be thinking creatively, too. You can even use play dough to teach the kids to learn their colors, letters, and numbers too!

How to Make Mud Version of Oobleck!

Have you ever made oobleck? If it’s new to you, read our article Oobleck Experiment – Everything You Need to Know! The consistency of oobleck is the coolest – it is both a liquid and a solid depending on how you are holding it! It is known as a non-Newtonian matter.

The only difference between the regular version and the mud version is adding either cocoa powder or brown food coloring. Adding cocoa powder is a fun addition because it adds the sense of smell to this sensory set up!

Tips on How to Make Mud for Play

Taste Safe Does Not Mean Edible!  Taste-safe is not synonymous with edible. It’s the opposite. Taste-Safe is all about providing a sensory base for young kids to safely use and learn these materials are not to be put in the mouth or consumed. If a child does get some in their mouth, a grown up will know that it is safe and not toxic. Muddy oobleck smells particularly delicious if used with cocoa powder, but I can promise you that it doesn’t taste good at all!

Have a Bin of Water Nearby. Oobleck will stick to hands! To extend the play time, have a bucket of water nearby so kids can reset their hands and keep on playing!

Add Washable Toys. Touching and exploring the oobleck is exciting in itself, but it’s also fun and great for fine motor skills to stick and pull objects out of the mud, and even wash off! The set up is so adaptable we’ve included cars, farm animals, dinosaurs, and bugs to name a few!

    Materials

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1

Mix together the corn starch and cocoa powder.

    Step 2

Add the water in slowly. You may find that you need less or more than 1/2 cup of water.

The consistency should be a solid when squeezed in your fist, but when you relax your hand it will turn into a liquid. Add more water if too dry, add more corn starch if too liquidy.

    Step 3

Grab some washable toys, tools, and a bucket of water for kiddos to clean off their hands!

Perks of Playing with Play Dough

Play dough is the ultimate sensory play experience. There are a lot of sensory bases available to explore (more on that below), but play dough is such a classic! The kids can mold it, hold it, shape it, and use it to make letters and other fun designs as well. You can also explore color mixing with play dough!

It is also fantastic for strengthening fine motor skills. As they grip and mold, kid’s hands and fingers are getting a great work out! Just think about all the different movements the hands will make in just a short time of playing with play dough – roll, stretch, mold, pinch, push, to name a few!

They can also use it to work their creativity and imagination as well and build and create fun artwork and projects.

making play dough into rainbow swirls

I also love to give play dough as gifts to toddlers and preschoolers, often in a themed-kit! For example, dinosaurs, unicorns, ocean, and super heroes are just some of the many themes I’ve put together! It is such a nice way to give a gift with a personal, homemade touch!

If you have little ones who still put things in their mouth, making a taste-safe foam will give grown ups lots of comfort compared to playing with the soap-foam alternative! In the video, you’ll see the secret ingredient to making the coolest taste-safe foam consistency – bean water!

fall sensory bin taste safe toddler baby foam

What is Aquafaba, aka Taste-Safe Foam?

It’s a fluffy foam created from whipped up bean water. The translation is literally, “bean water.” People who are allergic to eggs use this as an egg replacement in food recipes.

And like you see here, with our fall-themed sensory bin, aquafaba is also used to replace shaving cream and dish soap in sensory bins so that toddlers can dig right in without any worries of toxicity.

Whenever I’m cooking chickpeas in the kitchen, I always save the water for sensory play. We’ve used it in lots of fun sensory bins, and even made the foam in every color of the rainbow!

Technically, aquafaba can be made with lots of different types of bean water. However, I have tested it with black beans and it did not have the same fluffy and thick results that the chickpea water had!

    Materials

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1

To make the taste-safe foam, pour the chickpea water into a bowl and save the chickpeas for a yummy lunch or dinner!

    Step 2

Whip the chickpea water for 5 minutes until it forms a thick, creamy foam.

    Step 3

Then, add in orange food coloring and cinnamon for a fall-themed scent and look!

    Step 4

Add some bowls and spoons for scooping and transferring fall-themed items like leaves, sticks, apples, and pine cones.

    The Benefits of Sensory Play

Sensory play is so educational for toddlers. When they feel different textures, they are actively interacting with their environment. This causes their mind to create new connections and grow. Making it taste-safe allows even the youngest to participate and explore, so anytime you want to set up sensory play for your little one, don’t forget about the power of bean water!

This sensory bin activity is great for fine motor skills as well as creative thinking. Messy play is a fun way for early learners to really dive in and get to explore. The more that they can play and explore with their hands, the better. This will give them the chance to feel and see different textures, smell different scents, and use their minds in new and exciting ways.

Sensory Sand – Easy to Make and Taste Safe!

diy sensory sand play taste safe toddler baby

This sensory sand recipe is made with just a few taste-safe ingredients including stale cereal! The consistency is the coolest – it can be both moldable and crumbly, but isn’t sticky! It is so fun to squeeze and break up in the hand, and it’s also perfect for small world play set ups like ones that are construction or beach themed!

    Taste Safe Sensory Sand

This sensory sand recipe is safe for even the littlest of kiddos to play with because it is made with taste-safe ingredients. What is taste-safe? It means that if a child were to put the sensory sand in their mouth, it would be completely safe. Could they eat it? Sure, but it’s not going to taste very good! Plus, there’s a big reason to discourage it. This is the perfect time to teach young kids to not put sensory bases in their mouth even if they are taste-safe, so when they start playing with the real stuff they don’t try to eat it!

    How to Make Sensory Sand

Watch the video to see how quick and easy it is to make sensory sand! It’s so easy you and your kiddo could even make it together! We used stale cereal instead of flour (because why not use it instead of toss it?), but you could also toast up some flour and use that instead.

Once the sensory sand is made, you can decide whether you want to combine it with a small world set up, like we did with a construction theme!

    Tips for Making Sensory Sand

Instead of Stale Cereal. The key ingredient we used was stale cereal, but that’s just because we had some to use up. And using stale cereal for play instead of throwing it away is a total win in our book! However, if you don’t have any on hand, you can use regular flour. Make sure you toast the flour in the oven at 350F for at least 5 minutes though because flour is consider raw until cooked!

Blend Until Powdery. You’ll want to make sure you blend your cereal until it is like powder. You don’t want chunks of cereal in there for your kiddo to think they can eat! (Of course, if they do, it is taste-safe, but the goal is to not encourage that!)

Too Sticky or Dry? If too sticky, add a little more corn starch until the consistency is moldable when you squeeze it and crumbly if you squish it up. If too dry, be sure to add a little more vegetable oil.

How to store and How long. In a sealed container, we store our DIY sensory sand in the fridge for up to a month!

    Materials

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1

If using cereal, blend in a food processor until powder-like.

    Step 2

In a bowl, mix corn starch and the cereal powder.

    Step 3

Mix in the vegetable oil, using your hands if you like!

The Benefits of Making DIY Sensory Sand

Taste Safe. I’ve said it a million times already, but this sensory sand recipe is taste-safe – which means grown ups don’t need to worry if their little one sneaks a taste. The other sensory sands available for purchase are not taste-safe and usually recommended for kids at least 3 years and up.

Sensory Play. Did you know that sensory play has been said to create new nerve connections in the brain? Not to mention, sensory play is so immersive, you’ll likely find that your kiddo with the shortest attention span will play sensory-based activities longer than expected! Being able to use their eyes to see the sand, their hands to feel it, and their nose to smell it makes for the perfect combination of sensory play!

It couldn’t be easier to set up, but will result in lasting fun even for the littlest’s short attention spans. Plus, they’ll be exercising critical skills in the process of playing!

Adapt the Activity Based on Your Child’s Development

The fun part about this activity is that you need very few household supplies to create it. You can easily make this with an empty cardboard box or even an empty milk carton as well. The most important thing to choose is what object the “baby” will be fed. We used pom poms, but use them with caution if your kiddo puts things in their mouths because if the pom pom is small enough it is a choking hazard. It is best to use large pom poms, or something edible like cereal that can be safely consumed, or a larger object that cannot be placed in the mouth. Afraid your kiddo may try to feed a real baby? See below for our “Feed the Animals” free printable activity!

What is Hand and Eye Coordination?

Hand-eye coordination is a gross motor skill all about the hands and eyes working together. It’s the process by which hands accurately coordinate with information processed by the vision system. This is a skill that is developed during the early years and instrumental for completion of simple daily tasks like pouring a glass of water to more advanced actions in playing sports.

In this activity, the child’s eyes are coordinating with their hands and fingers to accurately place the item inside the small “mouth” opening in the box. It may look easy, but for the littlest one it can be tricky!

Tips for Making This Discover the Colors Activity

Budget Friendly Printer. We love the Canon PIXMA MegaTank Printers because they are budget-friendly and produce super vibrant colors! Its refillable MegaTank ink system prints up to 6,000 black / 7,700 color pages from one set of ink bottles— that’s 30 times what you can print with a conventional ink cartridge set!

Choice of Color. We love liquid watercolor because you can dilute it significantly and still have incredibly vibrant colors – lots more bang for your buck than food coloring! You could also simply use a paintbrush and watercolors too!

Laminate. I would highly recommend using a laminator because this is an activity your little one is going to want to do over and over again! Just swap out the colored cotton swabs for a fresh one and toddlers and preschoolers can keep on learning colors over and over again!

    Beyond Teaching Toddlers Colors

This activity is not only a perfect way for toddlers and preschoolers to learn colors, but it’s great for fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as well. Using droppers may look easy, but it is quite tricky for young kids! Squeezing the dropper and picking up the water takes a lot of coordination while strengthening pincer grasp.

Whether using a dropper or paint brush, both tools provide excellent practice for aim and precision. Utilizing hand-eye coordination, kids will learn how to get the color to fall directly on the cotton rounds.

And as mentioned above, this activity is a great opportunity for language development. Talk about the colors. Talk about the objects. Repeat your child when they say the color to emphasize the vocabulary!

Also talk to them about how the water disperses through the pad and “bleeds” into other areas. This will be a great way to show them that science and learning can be so much fun!

Building the Perfect Ocean Activity Kit

We make a ton of play dough kits. It’s my go-to for birthday presents for kids aged 2-5 years old! We have made kits for dozens of themes, but whichever you choose (ocean activity, race cars, Disney-themed, you name it!) below are the basics for the general types of items I look for to fill up a box:

    Materials

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1

Start by making homemade play dough. You can add glitter to it or used food coloring to make different colors based on your theme. In this ocean activity box, I included 3 colors, green (seaweed), blue (the water), and a sandy-color using a special sand play dough recipe.

    Step 2

Once the play dough is cooled down, add it to the storage containers.

    Step 3

Use the above as a guide for deciding what loose parts, figurines, and other items you want to include.

    Step 4

Close it up and cover in gift wrap if giving as a present!

The Educational Benefits of Ocean Activity Kit

One of the most significant benefits is that it is a great sensory activity that sparks imaginative play. Kids will be able to feel and use their senses to mold and shape the play dough while using their creativity to explore an entire world in their mind.

Molding, pulling, shaping, twisting, and pushing play dough are also fantastic for fine motor skills and hand muscle strengthening!

The other great advantage of this activity is that you can expose your kiddo to a miniature world – in this case, under the sea with lots of marine creatures! Talk about what figurines you’ve included and provide them with facts about the ocean habitat!

Educational Benefits for this fun Egg Slime Activity

Sensory Play. Did you know that sensory play has been said to create new nerve connections in the brain?! Yes, there is so much educational value in allowing your kiddo to experience sensory play. Sensory play is often long-lasting with a ton of engagement – even with young kids who have typically short attention spans. Plus, it provides opportunities for kids to play independently.

Additionaly, by making this activity taste-safe it allows even the youngest of kids to learn how to play with sensory bases. Taste-safe does not mean it is intended to be eaten, but it is safe if it is ingested. In other words, you do not want to encourage your toddler to eat the egg slime, but rather, if a child was to put it in their mouth and even consume it, this is the perfect opportunity to explain verbally that slime is not for the mouth and is not food. This is how they will learn to safely play with sensory bases of all types in the future!

egg slime sensory play taste safe slime

Fine Motor Skills. Fine motor skills are so important! Slime itself allows kiddos to engage the small muscles in their hand and fingers. Think: stretching, pulling, smooshing. But you can extend that fine motor strengthening further by providing tools like whisks, spoons, and bowls where kids will also be able to practice some important practice life skills like pouring, transferring, and scooping!

Tips for Making These Rainbow Popsicles

Food Coloring Choice. While my family does not have allergic reactions to food coloring, we are comfortable with adding it to food occasionally. But when possible, I make sure to choose a food coloring brand that uses natural fruits, vegetables, and roots instead of artificial coloring.

If you prefer to not use coloring at all, you can integrate natural foods and vegetables yourself to make colorful popsicles. For example, blueberry puree added to yogurt will make a purple color, strawberry puree added to yogurt will make a pink color, and turmeric added to yogurt will make a yellow color.

Yogurt Choice. Make sure the texture of the yogurt is not too thin and not too thick! It is important that the layers can easily be sucked up into the medicine dropper, but also sturdy enough that they stay as separate layers once dispensed into the popsicle mold!

Get the kiddos involved. This can be a fun sensory-based way for kids to work on their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills as they help to mix the coloring and then fill the popsicle molds with the ingredients.

Ways to Set Up the Sensory Bin

There are so many ways to set up an ocean-themed sensory activity. You can create a simple tray with water and marine creatures inside, you could freeze the marine creatures in an ice tower, or you could have your kiddos build an ocean-in-a-jar like pictured! You can play with this inside on a rainy day in the bathtub, or you could bring this outside as we did in our sandbox!

Sand Recommendation. I recommend getting play sand from Home Depot. They sell 50 pound bags for less than 5 dollars!

Figurine Recommendation. There are so many companies that sell figurines perfect for small world play set ups like this. My go-to is Safari Ltd, they sell figurines in many different themes and sizes from a set of small figurines, to very big ones! Plus, you can use the code 7DAYSOFPLAY to get a discount!

Tray or Bin Recommendation. My personal favorite right now is this tray with removeable sections. It is a great price and I love the way you can separate sections if you’d like while also retaining a deep dish!

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1

Put the sand in the container that you’re going to use. Add in a bit of the water and press down into place. (This hardens the sand quicker). Alternatively, you can place sand around the tray as we did in our sandbox!

    Step 2

Once the sand is packed down, pour the rest of the water on top. (you can add in the food coloring before this step directly to the water or add it now and give it a swirl)

    Step 3

Don’t forget to add the ocean animals and figurines!

    Step 4

Let the kids create a fun ocean water adventure. Perfect for creative play.

Not celebrating the 4th of July or New Years? You can alter this activity if you don’t want to use it as fireworks, and just turn them into squiggly spiders instead!

All activities should be supervised by an adult. Pom poms can be small parts and a choking hazard. They can be sold in larger sizes to prevent risks. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This post may contain affiliate links.

How to Set Up This Activity, Plus Grab the Free Printable!

Not only is this activity educational, but it’s just full of magical and sticky fun as well. My kids loved this activity because the vertical set up made it super engaging. By keeping the set up vertical, you’ll need to grab some kind of adhesive paper or tape!

And even though this activity is super simple to put together, we totally understand that grown ups are busy! So we created a free printable version of this activity! There are lots of ways to play with it – use dot markers, or even practice using tongs to place poms poms on top! Also try these free printables: Dot the Rainbow, Rainbow Color Match, and 5 Hands on Color Mixing Activities.

Teaching toddlers colors is one of our most favorite things – so be sure to check out our comprehensive list of color learning ideas!

    What is adhesive paper?

Adhesive paper (the Con-Tact brand for exaple) is typically used for covering surfaces and lining things like drawers and shelves, but it’s also an excellent tool for play activities! I use this all the time for crafts, and it’s just so slick and easy to set up.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1

Draw fireworks in various colors on the non-sticky side of the transparent adhesive paper.

    Step 2

Remove the paper backing to reveal the sticky size of the adhesive paper.

    Step 3

For a vertical set up, tape the paper to the wall, sticky side up.

    Step 4

Provide pom-poms and task your kiddo to match them with the correct firework!

    Educational Benefits for Sticky Fireworks

This is all about teaching toddlers colors. Whether just beginning, or continuing to exercise established color recognition skills, this is a fun way to match and identify colors. Always integrate opportunities for language development by saying the names of each of the colors, and asking your kiddo to repeat them.

Plus, use this simple fireworks craft as a great way to work on fine motor skills. In addition to learning their colors, they’ll be able to work on picking up the pom pom balls with their pincer grasp and apply them directly to the adhesive paper. This action is perfect for hand-eye coordination.

With just a handful of simple ingredients, this easy to make play dough recipe is a fast, no-cook way to make the ultimate sensory base for kids! The best part about making dough is that it can last a really long time – up to 6 months! – and can be used for so many fun learning activities, too.

    Sensory Fun with Play Dough

Not only is play dough fun to play with, but it is also super fun to make together! It is an awesome sensory experience mixing all the ingredients together and kneading the dough to form the perfect consistency. I also think that this is a super cool and unique idea for birthday parties as well as a parting gift for each child who attends.

Easy to Make Play Dough – Tips and Tricks!

Mix while hot, but use caution!

I wear gloves and mix the *very hot* play dough by hand to make sure that the dough is kneaded thoroughly, which spreads the heat, dissolving the granules to make a smooth texture. Don’t have your kiddos do this part!

Why is my batch too sticky?

Too much water was added! If too sticky add a little more flour.

Why is my batch too dry?

Not enough water was added! If too dry add a little more water.

Do I need to add oil?

The coconut oil gives the dough a super silky texture. You could also use glycerine. Alternatively, other vegetable oil will work too, but I’ve found that coconut oil makes it super silky!

What is cream of tartar, and do I need it?

The cream of tartar is a preservative and it makes the play dough have a longer shelf life. You can omit it, but the dough will not last as long!

easy to make play dough recipe homemade no cook

How can I store and how long does it last?

Play dough can last up to 6 months if stored in a sealed container. We like using 4oz jars as pictured below. But with all things that kid’s touch, there is risk of germs entering once touched, so always be sure to look for mold – seen as black dots. If black dots form, it’s time to throw out!

They can also use it to work their creativity and imagination as well and build and create fun artwork and projects.

easy to make play dough recipe homemade no cook

I also love to give play dough as gifts to toddlers and preschoolers, often in a themed-kit! For example, dinosaurs, unicorns, ocean, and super heroes are just some of the many themes I’ve put together! It’s such a nice way to give a gift with a personal, homemade touch!

Tips for Making This Dinosaur Kids Craft

Here are a few tips and tricks to making the most out of this handprint dinosaur kids craft!

First off, you can make handprints with lots of different art mediums. One of the ways we love making them is with stamp pads! Just press your hand down on the stamp pad until you see the hand covered with color! Handprints often come out even and dry very quickly. But the best part about them? The ink is totally washable! Of course, you can always use paint – the tempera paint will be the washable kind!

Also, make sure you allow for drying time if you add a stick border. We used tacky glue as it provides a long lasting hold, but that also means it doesn’t dry immediately like hot glue! Making the stick border was one of our favorite parts. Definitely enjoy some time outside collecting the perfect sticks to make the coolest looking texture to your frame!

    Materials

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1

Have your little one put their hand on the ink pad and then press their hand down on a white piece of construction paper.

    Step 2

Draw a head and tail onto the handprint to complete the dinosaur, then color it in with marker.

    Step 3

Cut out the entire dinosaur and glue it onto another piece of paper.

    Step 4

Place the sticks around the edges and glue them on as a frame.

    Step 5

Add a cute saying like “You’re Dino-Mite” if you are giving this as a keepsake gift!

One tip for the best car wash: use really strong tape. Another tip, make your own bowl of soil for your kiddos to mix onto their toy cars. This way, it controls how messy they can get. Also, just turn the hose on a little bit to conserve water and place activity nearby grass or a garden bed that could use some extra hydration!

Educational Benefits of this Water Activity for Toddlers

This water activity for toddlers might not teach reading or writing, but being outside and playing in the earth and water is still very good for your kids!

Even though young kids will enjoy it, this is truly a fantastic sensory activity for kids of all ages! From the grit of the soil to the ice-cold water from the hose, there are so many textures to experience.

Playing in the mud can help kids reduce their stress levels and even make them feel calmer. It’s one of the many benefits of both sensory play and being out in the sunshine.

How to Make This Oobleck Experiment

Oobleck is simply the combination of water and corn starch. You can also make it more vibrant by adding in a pop of color. Make one color, or make them all like we did! Once I made the rainbow oobleck (see the how-to below!), I added it to one bin, then added some water into the other bin. The bin of water is critical! Even my mess-loving kids still want to clean their hands after playing with this ooey gooey oobleck! Having the water nearby was a lifesaver because my kiddos can easily wash his hands when they got too sticky and then keep on playing!

Tips on Making and Disposing Oobleck

What color to use? Making oobleck is so simple, it only takes a few minutes! When adding color, I prefer to use diluted liquid watercolor because it is washable! Using it prevents stubborn stains that are more likely with food coloring. When mixing in the color, I like to add the color first to the water as it is easier to mix in!

Should I use a 1:1 ratio? Lots of recipes will say to do a one to one ratio of corn starch to water. However, since I add the color into the water, I prefer to slowly add the water into the corn starch mixture. Stop adding the water when the mixture can be squeezed into a solid and then turns into a liquid when your palm is open.

Mixture too soupy or too hard? If your mixture is not turning into a solid when squeezed, just add a little more corn starch. If your mixture is too hard and not turning into a liquid when held in a relaxed hand, then add a little water!

If I make all the colors in one bin, will they mix up? Yes they will! To avoid all of your beautiful colors immediately combining into a green or brown, use separate containers. One of my kids favorite. setups was when I made only the primary colors in separate bins and then they experimented with color mixing and creating secondary colors.

What if my kid tastes the oobleck? When using food coloring, oobleck is taste-safe. However, your child will quickly realize it tastes disgusting! As with all sensory bases, do not encourage tasting and always supervise.

How do I clean oobleck up? For these types of activities, it’s best if you set them up outside for easy clean up. I literally just hose everything down. It is safe for the grass. If playing outdoor is not an option, place some towels on the ground. Mix what is left of the oobleck with enough hot water to completely dilute it. With the water running in the sink, add small amounts of the mixture at a time to avoid the cornstarch from re-solidfying and clogging the drain. For oobleck on the floor, it can be easily wiped up or vacuumed when dried.

Can I store oobleck for later? Yes, you can store it in an air tight container. However, the cornstarch will separate from the water so it will have to be remixed. Discard if black dots are visible as this is mold.

How To Make This Easy Activity for Toddlers

The key to making this a color recognition activity, is to make your paper tubes colorful! You can use regular paint or spray paint, which will give you the fastest drying results. Alternatively, you can use colorful tape around a portion of the paper tube to designate it a particular color.

The other important tip in creating this set up is using a strong double sided tape or painters tape to secure the paper tubes to the wall!

With respect to toddlers using pom poms, it is important to keep in mind that objects like pom poms and marbles are small parts and are a choking hazard. Adult supervision is required! Pom poms can be sold in an extra large size which may be preferred for children who are very young and tempted to put them in their mouths.

Color recognition. As mentioned above, this activity is first and foremost a crash course in color recognition! Making the paper tubes colorful allows a child to match the pom poms and drop them through.

Fine Motor Skills. Picking up small objects like pom poms strengthens pincer grasp, an important fine motor skill! Plus, pushing those pom poms through the small hole into the paper tubes works more of those small muscles in the fingers and hands. Strengthening fine motor skills is critical at this young age! Placing the pom poms inside the paper tubes over and over again is also great hand-eye coordination practice!

Fine Motors Skills – Why Are They Important?

why are fine motor skills important, kids practice fine motor skills

Early childhood is full of learning through daily interactions and play – strengthening fine motor skills is an essential part of early childhood development. But what are fine motor skills and why are they so important?

What Are Fine Motor Skills and Why are They Important?

Fine motor skills are essential to our daily living, from stacking to painting and even cutting with scissors. We usually don’t think about the impact cutting lines on paper or picking up cereal will have on our children’s future, but wow oh wow, the muscles required for these actions are oh so important!

Fine motor skills may be the most valuable skill your children can ever learn, as they truly intersect with so many aspects of our daily life skills.

So, What Are Fine Motor Skills?

They are a skill set that involves small muscles in your hands, arms, and even eyes that manipulate objects. These skills are essential to children’s development but are often taken for granted, being deemed something one will just pick up naturally.

Motor skills help your child grasp small objects, follow you with their eyes across the room, write with a pencil and button-up cloths. While we build on these skills as we grow and learn through everyday tasks, to sharpen them, having our kids do activities that require them to use these particular muscles is imperative.

In this video, you will see a collection of fine motor activities for toddlers, plus don’t miss this spaghetti pull activity that strengthens pincer grasp, a feed the bunny activity that involves posting, and a fishing game that encourages hand-eye coordination (to name a few!).

Why Are Fine Motor Skills Important?

Motor skills are intertwined in almost every aspect of our lives. Their importance is unquestionable when you think about all the things you would not be able to do without them. With undeveloped motor skills, a child can suffer in feeding themselves, playing games alone and with friends, and taking care of their daily hygiene.

Motor skills catapult children into becoming self-sufficient and are connected to children’s confidence building, peer to peer play, and academics.

In this video, I share a compilation of activities preschoolers can do to help develop their fine motor skills. Plus, don’t miss our vertical scissor skills activity, DIY scooper tong which makes a great fine motor skills tool, and pre-writing activity board (to name a few!).

These activities will strengthen motor skills such as isolating the index finger from all other fingers, separating colors, properly holding both objects and tools all through sensory play.

    Developmental Milestones to Watch For

Fine motor skill development starts at birth! Your little one starts learning about their visual perception and surroundings as soon as they take that first sweet breath. They start with things like holding your finger with their tiny hand to grabbing bottles. These fine motor skills become even more pivotal as they grow from a toddler to a teen. Here are some of the significant developmental keys one can look forward to in developing fine motor skills:

When your babies are 3+ months, they should hold small objects in their hand, with their thumb not tucked. By 5 months, they may reach for toys and be able to keep them briefly. By 6 months, they may be able to follow objects in all directions with their eyes – an excellent sign that your baby’s fine motor skills are on a good trajectory. As your baby grows, you’ll notice they can do more and more with their hands as they follow you across the room.

The journey continues as they are able to move objects from hand to hand, keep their hands opened and relaxed for most of the day, pick up small items like cereal, give toys back when asked, and put objects down voluntarily.

scissor skill activity for preschoolers cutting patterns vertical set up

As your baby grows into a toddler, their motor skills will start to take a major leap; turning pages of a coloring book, putting toys in their container, using both hands to play with, and pointing with their index finger at objects. Yes, it all happens so quickly; during this time, your child is learning fast and is ready to put what they’ve maybe learned intuitively into some skilled activities.

Developing Fine Motor Skills Through Play

While developmental milestones are a marker for us to measure where our kids should be, we also MUST know that each child develops at their own pace.
